About the Bernedoodle Breed

The Bernedoodle is a hybrid dog breed, a cross between the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle (usually the Standard variety). This designer breed combines the calm and affectionate nature of the Bernese Mountain Dog with the intelligence and hypoallergenic coat of the Poodle. Bernedoodles are known for being friendly, loving, and great family pets, making them one of the most sought-after hybrid breeds.

Key Traits of the Bernedoodle

    • Temperament: Bernedoodles are typically friendly, gentle, and affectionate. They are very loyal to their families and get along well with children and other pets. Due to their Poodle parentage, they tend to be highly intelligent and easy to train, while also being calm and good-natured like the Bernese Mountain Dog.

    • Size: Bernedoodles come in three different size categories, depending on the size of the Poodle parent:

      • Standard Bernedoodle: This is the most common size and tends to be the largest of the three categories.
        • Height: 23–29 inches at the shoulder
        • Weight: 50–90 pounds
      • Miniature Bernedoodle: A smaller version of the breed, typically bred from a Miniature Poodle.
        • Height: 18–22 inches at the shoulder
        • Weight: 25–49 pounds
      • Tiny (or Teacup) Bernedoodle: A very small version, bred from a Toy Poodle.
        • Height: 12–17 inches at the shoulder
        • Weight: 10–24 pounds
    • Coat: The Bernedoodle’s coat can be wavy or curly, resembling that of a Poodle, or it can have a slightly straighter texture, like that of the Bernese Mountain Dog. The coat is typically low-shedding, making them a good choice for people with allergies. Regular grooming is required to maintain their coat and prevent matting.

    • Exercise Needs: Bernedoodles are active dogs who enjoy outdoor activities, especially those that involve their family. They are intelligent and enjoy mental stimulation, so a combination of daily walks, playtime, and puzzle toys will keep them happy. Standard Bernedoodles will require more exercise than Miniature and Tiny Bernedoodles due to their larger size.

    • Trainability: Bernedoodles are highly intelligent, making them easy to train. They are eager to please and respond well to positive reinforcement. However, like all dogs, they benefit from early socialization and consistent training. Their Poodle heritage contributes to their trainability, as Poodles are one of the most intelligent breeds.

    • Health: Like many large breeds, Bernedoodles can be prone to certain health conditions. Some of the common health issues they may face include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), and some genetic conditions inherited from the Bernese Mountain Dog. Regular vet visits, a balanced diet, and proper exercise are essential to maintaining their health.

How Big Do Bernedoodles Get?

The size of a Bernedoodle largely depends on the size of the Poodle parent. Here’s a breakdown:

  • Standard Bernedoodle:

    • Height: 23–29 inches at the shoulder
    • Weight: 50–90 pounds
    • Standard Bernedoodles are the largest of the breed and often have the calm, gentle temperament of the Bernese Mountain Dog, coupled with the intelligence of the Poodle.
  • Miniature Bernedoodle:

    • Height: 18–22 inches at the shoulder
    • Weight: 25–49 pounds
    • Miniature Bernedoodles are smaller and more manageable for those with less space, but they still retain the affectionate nature of the Bernese Mountain Dog.
  • Tiny (Teacup) Bernedoodle:

    • Height: 12–17 inches at the shoulder
    • Weight: 10–24 pounds
    • Tiny Bernedoodles are a smaller version of the breed and are ideal for families in apartments or with limited space.
